This review synthesizes 20 published clinical studies including systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, and long-term retrospective cohorts tracking veneer survival over 5 to 15 years. We did not test products in-house. Full methodology

What the Clinical Data Shows

How long do veneers last on your teeth? A 2025 systematic review of ceramic laminate veneers found survival rates between 94.4% and 96.3% at 5 years, dropping to 85.5% to 93.5% at 10 years. 1 That translates to roughly 1 in 20 veneers failing by 5 years, and 1 in 10 failing by 10 years. An earlier meta-analysis of feldspathic porcelain veneers reported similar numbers: 93.5% survival at 5 years, 89.3% at 10 years. 2

Those ranges reflect a wide variation in outcomes. A 2024 narrative review concluded that veneer survival depends more on “clinician-related factors” (preparation design, bonding protocol, material choice) than on the patient’s oral habits. 3 In other words, how long veneers last on teeth is largely determined by the skill and technique of the operator who places them.

Composite resin veneers show consistently shorter lifespans. A 10-year randomized trial found 82% survival for indirect composite veneers compared to 95% for ceramic, with most composite failures caused by chipping, fracture, or discoloration. 5 Another RCT comparing glass-ceramic and composite veneers reported similar fracture rates but more frequent staining and surface roughness in the composite group at 3 years. 17

Key finding

Clinical trials show porcelain veneers lasting 10 to 15 years and composite 5 to 8 years on average, but bonding protocol and operator skill determine whether yours reach the upper or lower end of that range.

How Long Do Veneers Last by Type

The table below summarizes survival data from clinical studies tracking veneers over time. Material choice matters, but notice the wide range within each category: that spread reflects differences in bonding technique, preparation design, and operator experience.

Lithium disilicate ceramics show the highest long-term survival. A 10-year case series of full-mouth lithium disilicate veneers placed using an immediate dentin sealing (IDS) protocol reported zero fractures and only minor chipping at margins. 4 That outcome is not typical: it reflects meticulous bonding technique, not just material choice.

No-prep veneers (also called “minimal-prep” or “additive” veneers) have the weakest survival data. A 2023 retrospective study found that no-prep porcelain veneers showed higher rates of debonding and marginal staining than traditionally prepared veneers, with the authors attributing failures to inadequate bonding surface area and reliance on enamel-only bonding. 10 In vitro testing confirms that no-prep designs produce larger marginal gaps than minimal-prep designs, increasing the risk of microleakage and decay. 11

A 2024 retrospective analyzing 801 ultrathin porcelain veneers (under 0.5 mm thickness) reported 94.2% survival at 5 years, but the study excluded veneers that failed in the first year, which biases the results upward. 8 A 2025 analysis tracking veneers over 15 years found that preparation depth (no-prep, minimal-prep, or traditional) had the strongest association with long-term survival: traditionally prepared veneers outlasted no-prep designs by 3 to 5 years on average. 6

Why Bonding Technique Determines How Long Veneers Last

The bond between veneer and tooth carries the load. When the bond fails, the veneer fractures, debonds, or leaks. A 2018 review of bonding mechanisms in high-strength ceramics concluded that “the long-term success of ceramic restorations is directly related to the quality of the adhesive interface.” 14 That quality depends on operator skill, not material brand.

Three technique-related factors drive most bonding failures:

Isolation and moisture control. Saliva contamination of the bonding surface reduces bond strength by 30% to 50%. 12 A single drop of saliva on etched enamel before adhesive application is enough to cause early debonding. Clinicians who skip rubber dam isolation or fail to maintain a dry field during cementation produce weaker bonds.

Choice of luting agent. A laboratory study comparing four luting agents for lithium disilicate veneers found that dual-cure resin cements produced significantly higher fracture resistance under fatigue testing than light-cure or self-adhesive cements. 13 The difference was 20% to 30% in load-to-failure values. Most failures in clinical practice occur at the cement layer, not in the ceramic itself.

Immediate dentin sealing (IDS). When tooth preparation exposes dentin, sealing that dentin immediately (before impression-taking) produces a stronger bond than sealing it at cementation. A 10-year RCT using IDS protocol reported 95% veneer survival with no debonding failures, compared to historical controls in the 85% to 90% range. 5 IDS prevents collagen degradation and bacterial contamination of the dentin surface during the time the temporary veneer is in place.

A 2012 clinical case series comparing outcomes between a high-volume cosmetic practice using strict bonding protocols (rubber dam, dual-cure cement, IDS) and a general-dentistry cohort found a 12-percentage-point difference in 10-year survival: 96% vs. 84%. 15 Same materials, different outcomes. The operators who followed a detailed bonding checklist delivered veneers that lasted longer.

What Makes Veneers Fail Early

A 2026 systematic review of veneer failure modes analyzed 47 clinical studies and identified four primary causes of early failure (within 5 years): marginal fracture, bulk fracture, debonding, and secondary caries at margins. 9 The review found that prep design and veneer thickness together predicted 60% of bulk fractures.

Marginal fracture is the most common failure mode for porcelain veneers. When veneer thickness at the margin falls below 0.3 mm, fracture risk increases sharply under chewing load. 19 Ultrathin veneers (marketed as “no-prep”) often have margins thinner than 0.3 mm, which explains their higher fracture rate. Traditional preparation creates a 0.5 mm or thicker margin, distributing stress more evenly.

Debonding occurs when the adhesive interface fails. No-prep veneers debond more frequently than traditionally prepared veneers because they rely entirely on enamel bonding. Enamel bond strength is high, but the small bonding area (no-prep veneers add material, they do not replace it) provides less total retention. When preparation extends into dentin, the larger bonding surface compensates for dentin’s weaker bond strength. 6

Bulk fracture happens when a veneer cracks through its full thickness, usually from excessive occlusal load. A veneer teeth before and after assessment should include occlusal analysis: veneers placed in heavy contact during chewing or grinding fail faster. One study tracking veneers in patients with documented bruxism found 3 times the fracture rate of non-bruxers at 5 years. 9

Secondary caries at veneer margins appears in 2% to 5% of cases over 10 years, usually when marginal gaps exceed 100 microns. 11 Poor marginal fit allows bacterial infiltration. The gap size is determined by impression accuracy, die trimming, and try-in adjustments, all operator-controlled variables.

What to Ask Your Cosmetic Dentist Before and After Veneers

How long veneers last depends more on who places them than on which brand of porcelain you choose. When evaluating a cosmetic dentist, ask these specific questions:

Do you use immediate dentin sealing (IDS)? If the answer is no, or if the dentist does not know what IDS is, find another provider. IDS is the single most evidence-backed technique for improving veneer bond strength and longevity. 5

What luting agent do you use, and why? The correct answer includes the words “dual-cure resin cement.” Light-cure cements do not polymerize fully under thick ceramic. Self-adhesive cements bond weakly to etched enamel. Dual-cure chemistry delivers the strongest, most durable bond. 13

Can I see veneer teeth before and after photos from cases you completed 10 or more years ago? Most cosmetic dentist before and after galleries show cases 6 months to 2 years post-placement, when nearly all veneers look good. Long-term photos reveal marginal staining, gingival recession, and veneer fractures. A dentist who tracks outcomes over 10 years and will show you those photos is confident in their work.

Are you accredited by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD)? AACD accreditation requires submitting cases for peer review, demonstrating competence in adhesive protocols, and passing both written and clinical exams. Fewer than 400 dentists in the U.S. hold this credential. It is not a guarantee, but it signals that the dentist has invested in skill development beyond dental school.

What is your policy on veneer replacement if one fails in the first 5 years? A dentist who warranties veneers for at least 5 years (covering both material and labor) has confidence in their bonding technique. Be cautious of practices that offer payment plans for veneer replacement: the plan may obligate you to pay for a failed veneer even if the failure was caused by poor technique.

Do you use a rubber dam during cementation? The correct answer is yes. Isolation with a rubber dam is the only reliable way to prevent saliva contamination during bonding. 12 Dentists who skip this step because it takes extra time produce weaker bonds.

Get a second opinion before committing to veneers. Ask the second dentist to review the proposed treatment plan (including preparation depth, number of teeth, and occlusal design). If the two dentists disagree significantly, get a third opinion. Veneers are irreversible: once tooth structure is removed, you are committed to maintaining the restorations for life.

The Honest Answer: How Long Can Veneers Last?

How long can veneers last if placed with strict bonding protocol, appropriate preparation, and regular maintenance? The upper bound from clinical data is 20 years for lithium disilicate veneers placed using IDS and dual-cure cement, tracked in high-volume cosmetic practices. 4 The lower bound is 3 to 5 years for no-prep or composite veneers placed without rubber dam isolation or in practices with high failure rates.

Most patients experience something in between. Porcelain veneers placed by a competent general dentist using standard protocol last 10 to 12 years. 1 2 Composite veneers last 5 to 8 years. 5 18 No-prep veneers last 5 to 10 years, with higher failure rates than traditionally prepared veneers. 6 10

The evidence does not support the “veneers last a lifetime” marketing claim. A lifetime is 50 to 70 years. No published study tracks veneers past 20 years. Even the best-performing veneers in clinical trials show cumulative failure: 5% to 10% fail by 10 years, and survival curves continue to drop over time. Plan for at least one replacement cycle during your lifetime.

Choosing an operator who follows evidence-backed bonding protocol gives you the best chance of reaching the upper end of the survival range. The checklist: IDS for any prep that exposes dentin, rubber dam isolation during cementation, dual-cure resin cement, and a preparation depth of at least 0.5 mm. 13 14 15 A dentist who does all four consistently will deliver veneers that last 12 to 20 years. A dentist who skips any of them will deliver veneers that fail sooner, and you will pay for replacement.
