What the coconut oil whitening trend claims
The practice of swishing coconut oil in your mouth, known as oil pulling, has become one of the most popular DIY whitening trends on social media. Influencers and wellness blogs claim that does coconut oil whiten teeth naturally, often promising visible results within weeks of daily swishing. The typical protocol involves swishing 1 tablespoon of coconut oil for 10 to 20 minutes each morning, then spitting it out before brushing.
Proponents attribute the supposed whitening effect to coconut oil’s lauric acid content and its antimicrobial properties. The narrative goes that the oil “pulls” bacteria, toxins, and surface stains from teeth, revealing a whiter smile over time. Some sources claim it works as well as commercial whitening products without the chemical exposure or tooth sensitivity.
The appeal is obvious. Coconut oil is inexpensive, widely available, and the method requires no special equipment. If it worked, it would be an ideal natural whitening solution. But does the clinical evidence support these claims, or is this another case of wellness culture outpacing the science?
Does coconut oil whiten teeth? What 4 clinical trials actually tested
Here is the disconnect: four randomized controlled trials published between 2017 and 2024 tested coconut oil pulling against placebo or other oils, and none of them measured tooth color or whitening as an outcome.
The four RCTs on coconut oil pulling measured plaque scores, gingival inflammation, and bacterial colony counts. Not one trial measured tooth shade, color change, or whitening efficacy. The whitening claims circulating online have zero clinical trial support.
A 2023 split-mouth RCT compared coconut oil to sesame oil in 40 participants with gingivitis.1 Both oils reduced plaque and gingival scores significantly over 30 days, but the researchers measured plaque index and gingival index only, not tooth color.
A 2019 triple-blind RCT tested coconut oil pulling in 60 participants over 4 days.2 The intervention group showed significant reductions in plaque growth compared to placebo. Again, the outcome measures were plaque scores and gingival scores, not shade change.
A 2017 RCT with 60 dental students compared coconut oil pulling to a placebo (distilled water) over 30 days.3 Coconut oil significantly reduced plaque scores compared to placebo. The study conclusion stated coconut oil pulling “can be used as an adjunct to routine oral hygiene,” but it did not test or claim any whitening effect.
The most recent trial, a 2024 triple-blind RCT, compared sesame, coconut, and sunflower oils.4 All three oils reduced plaque, gingival scores, and Streptococcus mutans colony counts. Coconut oil performed comparably to the other oils. No whitening outcomes were measured.
This is not a case of weak whitening effects that barely missed statistical significance. The researchers did not measure color at all. If you search PubMed for “coconut oil” AND “teeth whitening” or “tooth color,” you get narrative reviews that mention the whitening claims anecdotally, but zero trials testing the claim directly.
What coconut oil pulling does do for oral health
The clinical evidence shows coconut oil pulling has measurable effects on plaque and gingival health, even if those effects are modest. This matters for context, because the oil does something, just not what the whitening proponents claim.
Across the four RCTs, coconut oil pulling reduced plaque scores by approximately 15% to 30% compared to baseline or placebo.123 The effect size is smaller than what you would see with chlorhexidine mouthwash but larger than doing nothing. One trial found a 25% reduction in Streptococcus mutans colony counts after 21 days of oil pulling.4
Gingival inflammation improved as well. The 2023 split-mouth trial reported statistically significant reductions in gingival index scores in both the coconut oil and sesame oil groups, with no meaningful difference between the two oils.1 This suggests the benefit comes from the mechanical action of swishing and the lipid-based saponification of bacterial membranes, not from any unique property of coconut oil specifically.
The protocols in these trials were consistent: participants swished 1 tablespoon (approximately 10 to 15 mL) of coconut oil for 10 to 15 minutes each morning before brushing, then spit it out. None of the trials reported adverse effects beyond occasional jaw fatigue from prolonged swishing.
Can coconut oil pulling whiten teeth with longer use? The evidence gap
A common defense of the whitening claims is that the trials were too short. Perhaps does coconut oil pulling whiten teeth if you do it for months or years, even if 30 days is not enough.
This argument has two problems. First, none of the trials included even a secondary exploratory analysis of tooth color. If participants experienced visible whitening, you would expect researchers to mention it, even anecdotally. They did not. Second, there is no plausible mechanism for coconut oil to remove intrinsic stains or alter enamel reflectivity. Whitening agents like hydrogen peroxide work by oxidizing chromophores embedded in enamel and dentin.18 Coconut oil has no oxidizing capacity.
Extrinsic stains (surface discoloration from coffee, tea, or smoking) can sometimes be reduced by mechanical action, but that is what toothbrushing does. A 2026 review on natural and herbal whitening agents acknowledged that while oil pulling has antimicrobial and plaque-reduction benefits, “the evidence for its whitening effect remains anecdotal and unsupported by clinical trials.”6
A 2023 review on natural remedies for tooth whitening examined coconut oil alongside other DIY methods.7 The authors noted that while oil pulling improves oral hygiene, “there is insufficient clinical evidence to support its efficacy as a whitening agent.” The review emphasized that most natural methods perform poorly compared to peroxide-based systems in spectrophotometric testing.8
A 2026 critical analysis compared social media whitening trends to professional bleaching and found that DIY methods, including oil pulling, lack the clinical validation that professional and at-home peroxide products have.9 The authors concluded that while some natural methods may have oral health benefits, “recommending them for whitening purposes misleads consumers.”
The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, but after multiple RCTs spanning seven years, the fact that no researcher has measured or reported whitening as even a secondary finding suggests the effect does not exist at a clinically meaningful level.
Natural whitening methods with clinical data
If coconut oil does not whiten teeth, what about other natural methods that actually have been tested for color change? The evidence is thin, but a few agents have at least been subjected to in vitro or small-scale clinical trials.

Comparison of natural and evidence-based whitening methods
Strawberry polyphenolic extracts have been tested in vitro. A 2023 study found that a gel containing strawberry extract produced a modest whitening effect on extracted teeth, but the effect was weaker than commercial peroxide-based bleaching agents.10 The authors cautioned that the malic acid in strawberries may also demineralize enamel over time.
A 2025 study tested pineapple and banana peels for whitening efficacy.11 The trial found a statistically significant shade improvement, but the clinical effect was minimal (less than 1 shade unit on average). For comparison, at-home peroxide systems typically produce 2 to 5 shade units of improvement.13
Sweet potato and grape seed extracts have been explored for their polyphenol content. A 2025 in vitro study found that these extracts had antioxidant properties but did not produce clinically meaningful whitening compared to control samples.12
The overarching finding from comparative studies is clear: natural methods either produce no measurable whitening or produce effects so small they are not visible to the naked eye. A 2021 in vitro comparison found that lemon, orange, and strawberry extracts whitened teeth by less than 1 VITA shade unit, while 10% carbamide peroxide gels achieved 3 to 4 units.8
If you want whitening that actually works, the evidence favors peroxide-based products. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of at-home bleaching found that gels with 10% to 16% carbamide peroxide or 3% to 6% hydrogen peroxide consistently produced 2 to 5 shade units of improvement over 2 to 4 weeks.13 Sensitivity was reported in 30% to 60% of users but was transient in most cases.13

Is oil pulling safe? What to watch for
Coconut oil pulling is generally safe when used as directed. The four RCTs reported no adverse effects beyond mild jaw fatigue in some participants.1234 Unlike some DIY whitening methods (charcoal, lemon juice), coconut oil is not abrasive and does not erode enamel.
The main safety concern is opportunity cost. If someone skips evidence-based oral hygiene (brushing, flossing, fluoride use) in favor of oil pulling because they believe it will whiten their teeth, they are worse off. Oil pulling can supplement brushing but should not replace it. None of the trials tested oil pulling as a standalone intervention without toothbrushing.
Another consideration: swallowing coconut oil during pulling is not recommended. While coconut oil itself is not toxic, the oil after 10 to 15 minutes of swishing contains bacteria and debris from the mouth. Always spit it out, preferably into a trash can rather than a sink, as the oil can solidify and clog pipes.
If you are using oil pulling for its actual demonstrated benefits (plaque reduction, gingival health), it is a reasonable adjunct to your routine. If you are using it because you expect whiter teeth, you are basing that expectation on marketing, not evidence. The trials show it does not whiten.
If you want whitening backed by clinical data, look for products containing hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide in concentrations of 3% to 16%. Check for RCT evidence of shade improvement measured with a spectrophotometer or validated shade guide. Avoid products that rely solely on anecdotal claims or social media testimonials.
For methods that actually change tooth color, a 2026 narrative review on in-office versus at-home bleaching found that both approaches work when they use peroxide-based agents, with in-office treatments producing faster results and at-home treatments offering more gradual, controlled whitening.19 A 2025 meta-analysis on blue covarine toothpastes (which create an optical illusion of whiter teeth without bleaching) found modest immediate effects but no long-term color change.20
The bottom line: will coconut oil whiten teeth? The clinical trials say no. It reduces plaque and may improve gingival health, but those benefits have nothing to do with tooth color. If whitening is your goal, the evidence points to peroxide-based systems, not oil pulling.
